Why Volunteer Abroad?

There are many different people who choose to volunteer, however many of them share the same objective: to change the world for the better. Many people feel that the world needs to be changed as far as they are concerned. However, after people have volunteered in a struggling country or region, they begin to see that the world needs to be changed for everyone, including the volunteer. In the case for many volunteers, it is normal to leave their home country with the mentality that they are going to change the world in the limited time that they have. Many volunteers also believe that they will be the helpers as if there is a division between them and the misfortunate. However as many people learn with time and experience, it is about solidarity. Your job is not to change the world, but rather make a different in the lives of those who are struggling. It is important to remember that in the end, it is far more important to touch the lives of the recipients in a straining community, rather than improve their conditioned lifestyle.

There are vast amounts of volunteering projects that you can partake in. You can choose among orphanages, medical teams, teaching in a foreign country, and more. Each project specializes in foreign-to-local interaction and emphasizes community service and development. Many countries are suffering from malnutrition, poverty, and an insufficient education, so any help wanted is available. According to the INDEC, in Argentina alone, more than 58% of the population is living on or below the poverty line. Seven out of ten Argentineans are born into impoverished homes. Guatemala is suffering from social and economic failure. A vast amount of plantation in Costa Rica has undergone severe ecological abuse. This list is presented to offer validating facts to support the need for help and also to put in perspective what the world is suffering from everyday. Volunteering abroad is a great way to help alleviate these global problems. While contributing to the community, you also in turn learn a lot about yourself and your own capabilities. Working and living with locals and other volunteers in labor intensive situations will push you to your limits, and ultimately help you discover a raw version of what you are capable of accomplishing in both your life and he lives of others.
